Architectural and Engineering Technology at Thompson Rivers University provides its graduates with the technical skills required to enter careers in the building design industry within the disciplines of Architectural, Civil, Structural, Electrical and Mechanical Technology.
Courses cover architectural design, statics and strength of materials, structural analysis, fluid mechanics, electrical design, steel design, wood design and reinforced concrete design. Students will also learn about construction management, construction contracts, specifications, estimating, building regulations, technical writing and construction surveying. Academic courses in mathematics, physics and English, including an applied research project provide students with a complete skill set.

Demands for highly skilled technologists and designers are met by the detailed, intense and comprehensive career preparation offered to students in this program. The ARET program emphasizes the design processes in building technology, involving design projects for building structures, electrical, plumbing, lighting, and HVAC (heating, ventilating and air-conditioning) systems.
Before coming to TRU, I couldn’t even imagine how fast my life would change here. TRU gave
me all the opportunities I was looking for to unearth my true potential. I’ve met people from
various parts of the world, gained real-world work experience and most importantly, I have
learned more about myself. Being a part of the TRU community has been one of the most
meaningful and rewarding experiences in my life. One of the best things I did in my program
was my co-op. I put my learning into direct practice right away and that helped me secure a full
time position after I graduated.
